Keynote Topic:
Change: The Superhighway of our Journey through Life
Lynne Chronister, Assistant Vice Provost for Research
University of Washington
Benjamin Franklin is credited with saying “Certainty? In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes.” Two hundred years later, John F. Kennedy stipulated that a third entity was just as certain in this world when he said “The one unchangeable certainty is that nothing is certain or unchangeable ”. Now, fifty years later, the platform that Barack Obama and Joe Biden ran on was based upon their “Blueprint for Change” and just recently they called the Stimulus Package ‘Change to Believe In”.
While in principle and through our vote generally we endorse and embrace change, change can be scary, is inevitable and it can disrupt the flow of our journey. But it also is life nourishing, motivating, enriching and fun! Regardless of our perception of change in general or change that influences and affects our lives, there are two other certainties; one, we can either manage change itself or we can manage our response to change and, two, that we have enormous power to create change.
By exploring varying strategies and tools we can not only manage change in our uncertain environment but we can capitalize on it. We can lead and we can motivate ourselves, our colleagues and our students to celebrate whatever path we chose in our personal and professional journey to success
